The discovery of china clay (kaolin) and petuntse
deposits at Saint-Yrieix not far from Limoges sparked off local manufacture
of fine porcelain ware in 1771, becoming a major industry during the XIXth
century and the area remaining the principal centre of production in France
today. The National Museum of Porcelain in Limoges possesses
the richest collection of Limoges porcelain in the world, and provides
a complete picture of its development from earliest experiments to contemporary
productions. |
